Journeying Through Irish History

exploding myths!

by

Gary McMurray

This excellent and well-written introduction to Irish history will make a valuable contribution to your knowledge, setting out, as it does, the flow of Irish history - which is also our history - while exploding the numerous myths that have gathered around both the British and Irish understandings of history.

Read about Patrick of Ireland, the Ulster Plantation, The Williamite Wars (Derry, Enniskillen, Aughrim and the Boyne), The 1798 Rebellion, The Ulster Crisis, Partition, Northern Ireland, and the Future.

Did Catholics come into Ireland at the Plantation?  Was Cromwell attacking the poor Irish?  Was William of Orange supported by the Pope?  How important was the battle of the Boyne?  Had William only Protestant soldiers, and James only Catholic ones?  Were the first Irish nationalists Catholics?  Were the first Irish Americans Presbyterians?

You need to know the answers to these questions.

THE FOUR-HEADED MONSTER

When the Stormont Executive appointed four commissioners rather than the one that the legislation allowed for, one of the reasons was that this would cut out the need to engage expensive consultants to carry out research into the victims' sector, victims' needs, etc.

What we now find is that we have again been lied to by the government, because the four commissioners have now commissioned a research project to discover what? The needs of victims and survivors.

The needs analysis carried out and published by interim victims commissioner, Mrs Bertha McDougall, is now deemed redundant, and within months, have authorised yet another research project into victims' needs.  Mrs McDougall, one of the four new commissioners, must be feeling very sore at this turn of events, and at being publicly demeaned in such a manner.

This waste of money is deplorable, and would be much better used by those groups that are serving victims well.

This provokes the question:  Does government know what it is doing?  We were promised joined up government, but one department does not seem to know what another is doing!

We ask, Who agreed that another independent research report be written?  Who will pay for this?  Is the company chosen to carry out this research a 'safe' company for the government?  It would seem so.  So what does that tell you?  That the final report will, like all other government-sponsored reports, dovetail perfectly with what the govenment has already decided should be done for victims.  Sorry, not for victims, but for its own aggrandisement and popularity.

What a sad country we are living in!

MORAL EQUIVALENCE

Any 'PC' term that equates terrorist murderers with the legitimate 'forces' of law and order is unacceptable.  The do-gooders in the reconciliation industry want to remove all distinctions between the police and army on the one hand, and the terrorist murderers, thugs and gangsters on the others - for purely political purposes.

It was because of this issue, and Glencree's refusal to re-define its terms so that security 'force' people could participate in victims' programmes, and be classed as different from terrorist killers, that West Tyrone Voice withdrew from any group involvement with that organisation.  Glencree, and its fellow-travellers, wish to remove any clear distinction between these two groupings so that it could then jump on the republican band-wagon and condemn the security forces for doing their job - in very difficult circumstances.  Indeed, the thought is repugnant to decency.

The memory of my murdered policeman brother prohibits me drawing any equivalence between him and those who took his life so ruthlessly.  He was a police officer, and they were cowardly terrorists who robbed him of his life, my parents of their youngest son, and my brother and sister of a beloved brother.

The government-sponsored and inspired 'PC' approach is calculated to demonise those who cared most for our country, and to elevate those whose declared intention was to destroy Northern Ireland.  This is still very much what lies behind all their sugar-coated words; in fact, their utter hatred of everything British and Protestant lies only beneath the surface, as recent events at the home-coming parade of the RIR displayed so vividly.
